Another Voice Heard on Veteran's Day

It burdens my heart to think of all the men, women and their families that are serving in the military as I am sending you this email.  However, my mind goes back many years ago when Veterans were given the respect they so much deserve!!  I remember getting out of school and coming to the parade and how the streets were lined up.  Slowly as the years have gone by, it is almost like we have forgotten about these men.  It is absolutely a sin to be let out of school to attend such an event.  We must teach that curriculum!

Every year at school on Veteran’s Day we have the men and women from the community that play at funerals.  I always cry because I think of how these aged men and women use their time and energy to keep the memory of Veteran’s alive. I could always just feel the cold chill bumps running wildly throughout my body as they folded the flag and read what each fold represented.  Seeing the students sit and watch in awe of what they were seeing and hearing ….. hopefully understanding the true beauty of the American Flag.

 With that being said…this year the program did not happen because one of the men that always come has a heart attack.  I haven’t heard anything about how he is but I know God is in control.

I guess for me I always think of Papa and how I wish he could still be with us.  I miss hearing all of his tales that he use to tell usJ  However, I know he is in a better place.  

I pray for all of these men and women but  I also pray for all of us to open our hears and take time to pray because after all we have a war going on and people are dying each day to protect our freedom.

Veteren's Day

Another Veteran's Day has come and gone. What thoughts went through your mind? Did you thank God for those who have served and are serving? Did you thank those in your own family who have or are serving? Did you ask God to protect so many who are now serving around our world? Did you even realize it was Veteran's Day?

My Daddy came to my mind, he died about a year and a half ago. He served in the Navy at the end of WWII. Then there's my brother Marty who served in the Navy during the peace time of the late 1970's, my uncle Harold who was a Marine wounded in Korea, my uncle Kermit who also served in Korea and had over a 20 year career in the Army.

Then there was my blood father, Herbert, who served in the peace time of the late 1950's and later in Viet Nam in the Army. There's my uncles, Wallace and Thurman who both served in the Army during the late 1950's, My stepbrother, Joe served in the Navy in the 1960's, my uncle Tom who served in the Air Force during the Korean War. There's also my uncle Fitz who served in both the Navy and later the Army in Viet Nam. I am probably leaving some of them out. I can even go to the ancestors and their service to their country, during the Civil War, on both sides and the Revolutionary War, Peter Steenbergen and John Elmore.

While I can talk of those who served their country in the military, it should not be forgotten the women of our families that helped to keep the country moving by taking jobs  the men had to leave behind. My grandmother, Lillian, worked in an anmunitions factory during the WWII and don't forget those wives who kept the homes together while their husbands were over seas. 

 In the past God and country were two words that were just naturally connected, unfortunately today that is not always true.

I hope and pray in this time of uncertainty that we do not, even for a second take our freedoms for granted. God is certainly always in control. How will He deal with us if we forget our connections with Him and our freedoms?

Just the Girls!!

Me, Mollie, Aunt Brenda, and Shirley, my mom!! My Mom was 19 when I was born, Brenda was 7, so she's more like a big sister. She also gave up her job to take care of Mollie for the first two years of her life. My Mom took care of Mollie's clothes from the time of birth until about the time Mollie was 14!!!! I'm not sure if Mom intended on doing her laundry for 14 years or not!!! Not only did she wash them, she bought most of them too. A huge help in our lean years especially.
